School Nutrition Services - Lunch

Nutrition

Welcome to the School Nutrition Services Department

“Providing nutritious meals which support a healthy nutritional environment”

School Nutrition and Daily Menus

The goal of the School Nutrition’s Services Department is to provide healthy nutritious breakfasts and lunches to all students. Breakfast is available to all students and encourages your students to participate in the breakfast program. Eligible students receive meals free or at a reduced price.

300 Breakfasts and 1300 lunches per day!

The School Nutrition Services Department plans, prepares and serves 1300 lunches and 300 breakfasts a day in 5 school buildings. Additionally, ala carte items are available at the Middle School and High Schools. We have a staff of 20 employees. Most of our employees have completed the Serve Safe Food Sanitation and Safety course and hold a food handlers license.

The School Nutrition Program is operated under the federally funded National School Lunch Act and Child Nutrition Act. The federal laws regulating the program are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

Our Menus

All menus are planned to reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans with no more than 30% of total calories from fat and no-more than 10% total calories from saturated fats as calculated over a week’s cycle of menus. These regulations also provide a standard for school lunch to provide 1/3 of the recommended Dietary allowances for protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Irion, Calcium and Calories. Breakfasts are planned to provide ¼ of the recommended componetents to be served in certain amounts. There are four food components for Lunch-Meat/Meat Alternate, Grains/Breads, Vegetables/Fruits and Milk. We serve only whole wheat or whole grain bread products to include pizza crusts, muffins, cookies, tortillas, rolls, buns, and bread. We also serve brown rice, readymade cereals less than 10% sugar and farm fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers when available.

Our Nutrition Program also operates under the Offer vs. Serve provision. This provision requires students be offered five meal components but they need not select all the components for the meal to qualify for state and federal reimbursements. For lunch, students may select three out of the five components at the high school and four of the five components at the other schools and for breakfast three of four components may be selected.

Pre-payment Plan Makes It Easy

All schools operate on a computerized pre-payment lunch accounting system called Sky. Every student in the District has a School Nutrition Account. Elementary students have their barcode scanned from a class roster. Secondary students enter their lunch account number into the system and a picture of the student is displayed to verify the account or cash may be used. Any breakfast, lunch, ala carte item or milk items are deducted from the students account.

We look forward to serving your child a nutritious meal. We also encourage you to visit you students Cheesemaker Café and join them for breakfast and lunch. We are always open to feedback please provide your feedback to Eric.Ekum@Monroe.k12.wi.us.

Respectfully,

Eric Ekum
