The School District of Monroe held a special Meeting of Electors on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Monroe High School Gym and Performing Arts Center at 6:30 pm. A total of 1,730 people were registered to vote. 1,726 voted. The purpose of this meeting was to secure approval from District Electors to purchase land identified as the B&S Property for the construction of a new high school facility and campus. The meeting has great significance and will shape the future of the greater Monroe community for decades to come. Electors of the District in attendance voted to APPROVE the proposed B&S land for purchase by a vote of 1,064 for and 660 against. 2 ballots were spoiled. The Board of Education is excited to be part of this incredible opportunity for our current and future students, and community. The construction of the new high school on the B&S site will benefit the entire community for many generations. During construction, our Abraham Lincoln Elementary students and high school students will have as normal an educational experience as the classes before them, including the continuation of our extra-curricular activities with a normal practice and home competition schedule. We look forward to the next steps in the process as we all work toward our best future. As a community, we should be grateful for the vision of the owners of B&S and their willingness to take on risk to help get this project done on a property that meets all of our needs. The Board of Education and community are pleased to have closure on the placement of the new high school and will have additional information released in the coming days regarding next steps regarding the construction site. A New Monroe High School - Building for Our Future

The process of bringing the referendum question presented to our community to build a new High School on a new site and remodel Abe Lincoln is the culmination of 5 years worth of work and engagement, beginning with community forums in 2017 to develop a strategic plan and subsequently led to an RFP and a facilities study in 2018. The effort included multiple newsletters, multiple community listening sessions, multiple committees, and two community surveys sent to every mailbox in the District. With the passage of the referendum on November 8th, 2022, and the subsequent resolution of the lawsuit that challenged the validity of the referendum, we are excited to move forward and provide our students with a new high school on a new site that will be an investment in the future and ensure that the students of today and tomorrow will have a safe, modern educational atmosphere to pursue their passions and prepare them for college, the workforce, and beyond. With a student-centered focus, we will strive to provide a facility for our students and leave our children and community with a legacy we can all be proud of.

The School District of Monroe has researched properties in and around the City of Monroe that would satisfy the following criteria: 60 or more useable acres to have room for school activities on site, proximity to utilities, efficient site circulation, space for current and future building and site needs, and comparing the cost of the land plus site work. The Board of Education has determined that the B & S property, located on 31st Avenue near Northside Elementary School, is currently the most viable property that meets our criteria and is the most affordable of all the options available, including building on the existing high school location.
