September - Joah Wellman
I was so excited to nominate Joah and see him as our building selection for student of the month. After teaching Joah in science next year and seeing his leadership throughout his involvement in student council, I see so many different reasons why Joah is deserving of this award. Joah is a student who is hard working, positive, reliable and dependable, creative and influences good in all those he meets.
What I find most remarkable about Joah is his positive attitude. We can all think of a time where we didn’t get enough sleep, things didn’t go our way or we were overwhelmed with things happening in our life and it can impact how we interact with others. We speed up, we lose the time to connect with others or may not smile as often as we would otherwise. This is something I have NEVER seen in Joah. Joah is a student I think of when I hear the quote, “Start each day with a grateful heart.” Each morning Joah comes in with high levels of positive energy, he welcomes and greets everyone he meets and always has a smile. And that positive attitude continues throughout the day. His attitude is contagious and influential on everyone that encounters him. Joah is also an incredible role model to his peers.
This year at the middle school we use the CHEESE analogy for character, hard work, empathy, excellence, safe choices and engaged learners. Joah is a model for each and every one of these characteristics. Whenever you see Joah in class or out in the halls, he is doing the right thing. As a student council advisor, it can sometimes be worrying to take a large number of middle school students on overnight trips in larger communities, but to take Joah, it is reassuring that you know he will be doing the right thing and representing our school and community well, while helping his peers to do the same. His compassion for others and willingness to help also highlights his hard work and empathy. He does a great job of recognizing moments when he or his peers may not understand something and is willing to ask questions out loud or explain things so everyone can understand and feel successful. His participation in class and activities show his engagement in not only his academic achievements and learning, but in making our community a better place.
Joah you are so incredibly deserving of this award, Congratulations!

April - Elise McKenzie
Elise is a student who goes above and beyond in every single way. From her character, to her creativity she continues to put forth 110%. She is involved as a leader in WEB and student council, and shares that leadership within the classroom. In science class, students always have the choice between a test or a project, and Elise never ceases to amaze me with her project choices are awe-inspiring.

March - Grant Ula
Grant is a student who models outstanding student expectations consistently. His respect towards staff and fellow students is exceptional and he is always prepared and taking care of his responsibilities in class. Grant is a student who puts forth a great deal of effort to model success for his peers and is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

February - Kaitlyn Schmidt
Kaitlyn is an amazing student. She is helpful and kind and wants to be successful in all aspects of school. I have Kaitlyn in Algebra this year, and on top of working hard in class, she also requests to come in for extra math time during our Flex time. This is completely voluntary and she does it because she just wants to improve her skills as well as to help other students. If I could have 100 Kaitlyn’s in class, then my job would be easy!
--Mrs. Valerie Bryson
Mr. Boehm appreciates her leadership. Among other accomplishments she is a WEB leader/mentor for 6th grade students and our advisors, Mr. Bruggeman and Mr. Riddle have great things to say about what she brings to the program and the way she supports her mentees. Her intelligence, resilience and calm demeanor stand out as key positive attributes. She has a wisdom beyond her years that you sense immediately if you’ve had the chance to interact with her. She also has a great sly sense of humor. She will be greatly missed at MMS and MHS is getting someone special next year.
--Mr. Brian Boehm

January - Kamrin Gerber-Reamer
I have Kamrin in Algebra this year. He started out the year in core math and we made a move early on and he is thriving. I love a comeback story of success and Kamrin is one of those. Covid made learning math online difficult for some (most) students, and Kamrin was one of those students. Kamrin fell behind, but has made strides toward being right back where he was pre-covid. I even convinced him to be on the math team. :)
Kamrin is always willing to raise his hand and volunteer in math and he works well to teach others who it may not come as easily to. He is kind and helpful and we need more math leaders like him! I am so happy that he is doing so well this year in this class. He is super respectful to me as his teacher and goes above and beyond to make sure he understands anything happening in math class.
Kam is also a WEB leader, so he is spending extra time in his day working with 6th grade students. :)

December - Isabella Houston
Bella is someone who is relentlessly giving to others. It may be in time, acts of service or support but she is someone who continually thinks of what she can do for other people. In student council I have seen Bella volunteer for every opportunity, even if it means coming in early or staying late. She is willing to take charge and lead events and did a great job supporting our Halloween Dance earlier this year. She shares her leadership talents and abilities with those around her and recently led a breakout section for students in southern Wisconsin on ways to improve school culture and share ideas of community service. In the classroom, she also supports those around her and will explain things and make sure all group members are involved in group projects. She has an incredibly positive attitude, great work ethic and is an overall joy to be around!
--Ms. Meaghan McGuire

November - Savannah Graves
Savannah is just an all around lovely student! We are so lucky to get to work with her in math class this year. She is so conscientious as a student and always makes sure that she gives 100%. It is rare to have a middle school student who not only wants to complete tasks, but to also do them with the precision and with the amount of attention to detail that Savannah does. We can partner her with others and she is patient and kind when working with those students. Savannah is a quiet leader who we can always look to when it comes to sharing an answer in class and is consistently going above and beyond.
--Mrs. Val Bryson & Mrs. Lindsay Dahmen

October - Liam Saroca
Liam is deserving of this recognition because of his ability to lead with actions. He is an incredible role model to his peers and truly embodies the saying “Leadership is not a position or title, it is action and example.” Both in the classroom and out Liam does his part to be a great human. I first met Liam at the start of last school year and I am so impressed with how he has developed as a leader in that time. Liam has a heart to do what is best for everyone. He had initially run for student council office at the beginning of last school year and even with fears of public speaking, gave it an attempt. When Liam was not elected, it didn't slow him down. He volunteered his time and efforts at every event we offered last year and built connections and skills to run again for officer this year and CRUSHED his speech. He now has the position of student council officer but still maintains his lead by example personality.

September - Kloe Jordan
Kloe has put in a great deal of effort, patience, and support to her peers in science class this year. Even at times when things haven’t come easy, she continues to persist and ask for help when needed. She comes in with an incredibly positive attitude each day and is a role model for her classmates. She helps other students as we work in small groups by explaining things and assisting students when I can’t get to them right away.
--Ms. Meaghan McGuire

April - Evelyn Martinez
Evelyn Martinez is one of the hardest working students that I have had the pleasure to work with. Evelyn demonstrates perseverance in everything she attempts. Evelyn is caring and helpful. She is a positive addition to any classroom. Evelyn accepts challenges with a smile on her face every time. She is an advocate for her learning. She is respectful of school rules and demonstrates mutual respect in her interactions with everyone.
--Mrs. Andrea Hoenecke

March - Eli Schaefer
Mrs. Bryson: Eli. I don’t even know where to begin to explain all the reasons that I think he is deserving of this Lamp of Learning award. He is just the kindest, most helpful, incredibly respectful human that I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. I would never try to lump all 8th grade students into one group, but Eli does not act like your “typical” middle school student. He is just the most amazing leader of other students within my classroom and that skill comes naturally to him. Some students struggle in middle school to find the balance between independence and off task behavior. This is never a struggle for Eli. He is able to work with other students without needing me to sit and monitor his every move. I can always depend upon him to try his hardest and to mentor students around him. He is always positive. Always. He is never one to get down about anything and he is always smiling. I can depend on him to have an answer when everyone else is on the struggle bus. His character is unmatched and his positivity is infectious. Eli is also incredibly liked by his peers and never comes off as a know it all, when he does in fact often know it all.
I am also friends with Eli’s Tae Kwon Do instructor and am super aware of his discipline not only within the school setting but also in extracurricular activities. He is a second degree black belt, and he has accomplished this insanely difficult task while also being heavily involved in school programs. The work ethic across the board is something that Eli has without having to think about it at all.
Mr. Thompson: Eli is so deserving of this nomination. He is one of the nicest students that we have at MMS. Eli works hard in class, takes pride in his work and treats all people with the utmost respect. Keep up the great work, Eli!
Mr. Bruggeman: I have had the privilege of working with Eli Schaefer throughout his time in middle school. I find Eli to be a thoughtful, dedicated, talented, and exceptionally self-motivated individual. I trust that when I give Eli a task to perform, not only will it be completed, but he does not need me to check on him along the way. The work he has completed in my classroom is exceptional by normal measure; however, it has been extraordinary throughout the pandemic. As a WEB Leader, I have witnessed Eli develop leadership skills and soak up opportunities that challenge him to grow. He continually works to better himself and then shares that with those around him. Eli is a model student for this recognition.

February - Emarie Fritzenmeier
Interpersonally, Emarie is a very kind individual. While quiet and reserved, she finds opportunities to help peers in authentic and meaningful ways, and this collaborative attitude enhances the atmosphere of my classroom. If I ever see a student in fourth hour struggling or in need of encouragement, I can trust Emarie to be my “go-to,” and she abides with grace and sincerity. I am so fortunate to have her as a resource.
On a personal level, Emarie cares about her performance and continues to develop as an independent, ambitious learner. The growth that I have seen in my relatively short time working with her is admirable and significant. Without a doubt, Emarie will leave Monroe Middle School with the skills and habits necessary for success at Monroe High School.
I am proud to nominate Emarie Fritzenmeier as a candidate for the Lamp of Learning Award.

January - Anna Zentner
Anna demonstrates personal responsibility and mutual respect every day in the classroom. She fully attends to all learning opportunities and fulfills her academic obligations with the intent to do her personal best. In the short time that I have worked with her, I have seen her writing ability flourish, and she continually looks for ways to advance her skills beyond the specified requirements. She also adds to the classroom culture through her collaborative interactions with peers, her verbal contributions to discussion, and her independence as a learner. She truly is a shining example of the type of student and citizen we hope to produce at Monroe Middle School. I am so proud of her!
--Mr. Mike Flanagan
In Science Anna has been a class leader. She is prepared and does well with the content. When she does not understand something, she advocates for herself and gets the help that she needs to succeed. She is a good role model for others in the classroom. It has been a privilege to be her teacher this year and I’m excited to see what her future holds for her.
--Mrs. Lauren Burke
Social Studies - Anna is a dynamic and focused presence! She takes great pride in her work, where her creativity shines through. Perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay her is this: if your child was new to the district, I would place that student next to Anna Zentner.
--Mr. Jake Whitstone
As a WEB Leader I have noticed Anna’s leadership skills blossom. She engages the sixth grade students as she works with them. She also models the activities like a professional and works at encouraging all the students during the time she is with them.
--Mr. Brian Bruggeman
Anna has excelled in math. She is on an accelerated track and is currently taking Geometry while in 8th grade. She is so willing to work with anyone and brainstorm problems and her organization skills and academic work habits are second to none. She always contributes to class discussions and her smile and wit are infectious!
--Mrs. Ann Trow

December - Lane Scace
Mr. Boehm - I had the pleasure of subbing for Ms. Hicks and was extremely impressed by Lane’s readiness and willingness to help peers in class with their math. He helped several students. His positive attitude is awesome and his classmates and I benefited greatly from his math expertise.
Mrs. Burke (Science) - Lane is a hard worker and consistently performs well in Science. He also brings in a great and fun energy that is needed.
Mr. Thompson (Health) - Lane is a pleasure to have in class. He is always smiling and engaged. Lane is willing to help out others and is genuinely nice to his peers. Keep up the great work, Lane!

November - Sam Roidt
Sam is a conscientious and thoughtful student who is demonstrating his passion for learning on a daily basis. He is not satisfied with high-quality work - he demonstrates exceptional work routinely. He achieves the learning objectives established for him and then demonstrates mastery over those targets by performing at definitively higher levels of achievement. In the band room, Sam has taken the initiative to teach himself new notes and songs, most of this by ear. He then shares his findings with his classmates, sparking their interest and becoming the catalyst for other students to learn how to play music by ear. However, Sam’s most important feature is that he is an outstanding human. In the midst of today's sometimes dire news, Sam is a beacon of curiosity, honesty and happiness. He enters class ready to learn with a smile on his face. His warmth and enthusiasm are contagious. The classroom feels like a more cheerful place when Sam is present.
--Mr. Brian Bruggeman

October - Reece McIntosh
Reece does his work and never complains. He pays attention to the lesson and helps others be their best selves. He is a great tutor and teacher to others that do not understand concepts. I have pulled him to help during flex since he has understood what he is doing. He is always paying attention and always tries to do his best.
--Mrs. Camie Engels

September - Sophia Wu
Sophia is so deserving of this Lamp of Learning award for many reasons, but the characteristics I am most in awe of, each and every day, is her independence and advocacy. Sophia is comfortable enough to express her concerns in class, ask for help and is able to specifically ask for what she needs in order to be successful in class. I was able to witness this when she was virtual last year (sharing when technology wasn’t cooperating, if she was unsure of what work time expectations were, or asking how she could extend her learning while at home) and then again this year while she is back in person. This advocacy extends to her classmates as well. If a student is absent, she is willing to go the extra mile to make sure students have any work that they are missing, that her peers know what questions to ask of teachers, and she offers to assist them in understanding material they might have missed. Sophia is an incredible positive role model to her peers and demonstrates great Mutual Respect and Personal Responsibility. She is a team leader in group activities and works extremely hard to ensure that everyone in her group is actively participating and feels welcomed.
--Ms. Meaghan McGuire
Sophia is taking piano class this trimester and has demonstrated her ability to work independently and persevere through mistakes and repetition of practice to achieve success. She seeks out help when needed and focuses her time in progressing her musical abilities.
