9th grade Academic and Career Planning Conferences

Every winter school counselors will be meeting with 9th grade students to discuss the transition to high school, their individual strengths and areas of interest. During these meetings we will also discuss graduation requirements, post high school options, requirements and make a plan for high school overall.
11th grade Academic and Career Planning Conferences

Every spring School Counselors will be meeting with 11th grade students and parents to discuss the transition to high school, their student’s individual strengths and areas of interest. During these meetings we will also discuss remaining graduation requirements, post high school plans, requirements and what items need to be completed the end of Junior year and Senior year in order to reach the student’s individual goals.

ASVAB – MHS offers the ASVAB annually for all 10-12th graders. The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces. ACT TESTING

All Juniors take the ACT Plus Writing at Monroe High School at a state decided date . There is no cost to students/parents for this test. The score that a student earns on this ACT test date can be used for admission to college .

Students also have access to online ACT Prep, called MasteryPrep:
MasteryPrep is an online test-prep software which is designed to help students achieve success on the ACT through authentic practice tests and study materials. Students at MHS in grades 9-11, take two practice ACT tests: one in September, and one in January. After each one, students and teachers can see immediately how they did, and select from a variety of provided study materials built into the software. Throughout the year, students in homeroom engage in goal-setting and practice with MasteryPrep on an individualized level, so they can reach a high level of achievement on the state-required Pre-ACT or ACT in the spring. Students can access MasteryPrep any time through their MHS bookmarks bar or by going to appmasteryprepcom.
WI FORWARD

All 10th grade students take the WI Forward test on Social Studies annually.

The Forward Exam is a test which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin State Social Studies Standards.
PreACT

All 9th and 10th grade students will take the PreACT annually.

PreACT is a test that measures what students have learned in the areas of: English, Reading, Math, Science, and Writing.

It is an online test that predicts how a student will perform the ACT when they reach 11th grade.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMS

Advanced Placement exams are offered in May to students taking AP courses. Many colleges and universities offer college credit for passing scores on AP exams. Current MHS Students (Grades 9-11): In February, MHS students are given information and instructions at school regarding course selection and scheduling for the following school year. Students and their parents/guardians are asked to review the course information together, complete and sign the course selection form, and then return the course selection sheet to school within the designated time frame. Students and families are encouraged to contact the Student Services Office with questions about high school courses and future education and career plans.
Incoming Freshmen (Grade 8): Counselors visit Monroe Middle School to present information to eighth-grade students about future course selection at MHS.
Course Information Night: MHS offers information to parents and/or guardians of current MHS students and incoming 8th graders at Course Information Night in February regarding classes at MHS for the following school year, presentations about specific high school opportunities and school expectations.
Monroe High School’s classroom schedule is based on the course requests students make during spring registration. When a student’s course selection is finalized, a series of commitments on the part of the school is made. Course selection, therefore, is extremely important and should be considered as much a commitment on the part of the student as it is the school. Students are urged to consult with parents, course instructors, and counselors before making course selections. Some schedule changes may need a parent and/or teacher signature. Changes that may need a signature could include dropping a core course, requesting a change of teacher or adding/dropping specific elective courses.
Schedules may be adjusted at the end of the school year and during the summer for the following reasons:

Student fails a required class and needs to make up the credit

Due to a schedule conflict the student needs to make another choice
-
Student wishes to add a seventh or eighth class
-
Evidence of scheduling error/computer error
-
Student has an incomplete schedule
-
Requests for a schedule change do not automatically equate to a schedule change being approved.

Schedules will NOT be adjusted for the following reasons:
• Student wishes to drop a course due to changing their mind.
• Change of schedule because of personal preference of lunch, study hall, or use of RP time.

New Student at MHS

All new students must first register at the District Administrative Center on the third floor of the Monroe Public Library – 925 16th Avenue, Suite 3. Once registration has been completed and records from the previous district have been obtained the MHS Student Services Office will contact the family to set up a meeting time to discuss the student's schedule and other new student information.
Withdrawing from MHS

Students planning to withdraw from Monroe High School must obtain an Enrollment/Withdrawal Form from the Student Services Office at the high school or at the District Administrative Center on the third floor of the Monroe Public Library – 925 16th Avenue, Suite 3. Students must also come to MHS Student Services to obtain an additional form to check out with their teachers. All forms should be returned to Erin Blum in the MHS Student Services Office.

LAUNCH is a collaborative classroom experience for Juniors and Seniors featuring project-based learning to solve real-world problems right here in our community. Students will have the opportunity to take classroom knowledge into the real world and gain experience working with local business mentors. Students will develop career skills in leadership, collaboration, critical thinking, problem-solving, time/project management, and more.

Career Exploration through Student Occupation & Academic Readiness (SOAR)
Are you interested in exploring a career before you leave high school? At Monroe High School, we want to ensure students can make informed choices when it comes to their future career pathways. The SOAR program provides experience and knowledge about local, well-paying careers that fit students’ strengths and interests.
Monroe’s SOAR program offers three options to give Junior and Senior students the opportunity to earn a fair wage while receiving hands-on training.
Work Experience allows students who are currently employed to earn school credit for working instead of taking a class. Work Experience positions are existing entry-level jobs. Students are required to work 10 hours per week and provide bi-weekly proof of employment. Students provide their own transportation and may receive time during school to go to work.
SOAR Internships require a school year-long commitment and are offered by employers willing to provide a mentor to help students master the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for career success in their industry. Students apply for SOAR Internships and interview with participating businesses. As with Work Experience, students are required to work 10 hours a week, and they earn school credit for working instead of taking a class.
Is SOAR for Every Student?
Yes! The benefits of work-based learning are so varied that every kind of student can find tremendous value in it. For students joining the workforce after graduation, SOAR offers exploration of jobs and employers, along with hands-on opportunities for students to explore their career interests and develop necessary hard (technical) and soft (character) skills for future employment.
For college-bound students, SOAR can provide experiences that make college classes more meaningful, make higher education more affordable, and provide students with insight into what it will take to reach their career goals.
The skills students learn through the SOAR program will be of benefit no matter what career they choose. Critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and data analysis are necessary skills in today’s workforce. Most importantly, SOAR experiences give students a chance to evaluate career options before they invest in higher education.
SOAR is a win for business owners too. Youth Apprenticeships and internships offer a valuable tool to develop new employees and a pipeline of talented workers to help businesses grow.

Similar to SOAR Internships (paid on-the-job learning, students apply and interview for the program, and great results depend on a good mentor) with the added bonus of earning certification from the State of Wisconsin in their chosen industry pathway. (Not all industries have a Youth Apprenticeship pathway. More are being developed every year.) Youth Apprenticeship students work a minimum of 450 hours (generally a school year plus a summer) while receiving related educational training through school. Students can start a Youth Apprenticeship as early as the summer before their Junior year and continue to graduation.
