The Story Behind Got Your Back
The Got Your Back app grew from the mission and work of Jacob's SWAG, a foundation created in memory of Jacob, a vibrant young man whose life was lost to suicide in 2012. Jacob was known for his kindness, humor, and ability to make others feel seen and valued. One phrase he often shared with his friends in middle school was, "I've got your back." It was more than just something he said—it reflected the way he lived. Jacob wanted his friends to know they could always count on him, no matter what.
That simple but powerful message became the inspiration for the name Got Your Back.
The app's logo carries that same meaning. It features a silhouette of Jacob at age 14 standing back-to-back with his best friend as an adult. Together, they symbolize a friendship built on loyalty, trust, and enduring support—a reminder that they continue to "have each other's back" and that Jacob's legacy lives on through the lives he touched.
In the wake of unimaginable loss, Jacob's family turned grief into purpose by creating a movement focused on mental health awareness, suicide prevention, bullying prevention, and helping young people know they are never alone. Through years of advocacy and support, one message remained at the center of their work: it is okay to not be okay.
As the Jacob's SWAG Foundation concludes its work, that legacy continues through the Got Your Back app. The School District of Monroe is proud to carry this important resource forward, helping connect students, families, and community members with trusted adults, mental health resources, and support when it is needed most.
The mission remains the same: to ensure every child knows they matter, every voice deserves to be heard, and no one has to struggle alone. Because someone will always have your back.
Why the District Offers the App
