Welcome back, Parkside families! We’re so excited to begin another colorful and creative year in the art room. Your young artists are already diving into fun fall projects, and we can’t wait to see what they create this year!
We’re happy to announce that every student’s Artsonia portfolio has been set up for the school year. Artsonia is a secure, online platform where families can view their child’s artwork, leave comments, and even share their creativity with loved ones near and far. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate your child’s artistic growth and keep a digital record of their work over the years.
Be sure to check your email for an invitation to access your child’s portfolio. If you need help getting connected, feel free to reach out!
Here’s to a year full of imagination, inspiration, and art! 🖌️🍁

Once again, fourth and fifth grade students will have a fantastic opportunity to engage in reading and friendly competition–that’s right, it’s Race-to-Read time! Starting in November, fourth and fifth grade students are encouraged to participate in a district-wide book competition, where students will read eight award-winning books and compete against other elementary schools in May.
Students will be responsible for reading the books over the course of the next few months and preparing to answer quiz bowl-like questions for the competition. Participating students will meet several times during their lunch time to help their reading stay on track and to better prepare for the competition in May.
Parkside facilitators, Mr. Schulte and Mrs. Kiley will be talking to the fourth and fifth grade students in the next few days to explain the Race-to-Read program in greater detail. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
Happy reading!

Parents/ Guardians,
Please put an extra set of underwear/clothes/socks in your child's backpack in case of accidents or spills. The nurse's office has a very limited supply of extras and kids often feel most comfortable in something of their own in these situations.

- Your student is absent or has an appointment.
- You are picking up your student early.
- There is a change to your child's regular pick up routine. We never take the word of a student on their changed plans, we must hear from a parent/guardian.
- You have questions about sick guidelines and need assistance determining if your child should come to school.
- You are wondering if your child has an item in the lost and found.
- You have any other questions- we will do our best to help!

As much as we want your child to be in school every day possible, please keep your child at home if they have any of the symptoms listed below. School is not a place that a child can easily rest if they aren't feeling well. Being at school also increases the chance of the illness being passed on to the other children.
- Fever over 100.0 degrees
- Vomiting in the past 24 hours.
- Diarrhea- runny, watery or bloody stools.
- Sore throat with fever.
- Rash with fever.
- Eye discharge- "goopy" thick discharge, matted eyelids and pink eyes.
- Cold symptoms that cause sinus or chest pain. Coughing up mucus.
Your child should stay home until free from a fever, vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours without medication to control the symptoms. Children often come back too early and have to be sent home again when symptoms return.
Full sick day guidelines are linked below.

It is hard to believe that we are already into October. Now that we are a month into school, frustration might be happening more as work starts to become harder and we start to get into more of a routine. When your child gets upset, have you ever noticed that sometimes when you say "calm down" it can make things worse? When kids are in a bad mood, what they really need is connections.
Here are seven creative things you can say instead:
1. "Looks like you've got some stormy clouds inside right now. Want me to sit with you until they pass?"
2. "I'm on your tema, even when things feel tough. Want to tag me in?"
3. "I can see your feelings are really big. Do you want to show me with your hands how big they are?"
4. "I wonder if your feelings are asking for a break, hug or something else. What do you think?"
5. "Your face is telling me a story. Do you want to help me understand the words that go with it?"
6. "I can see your feelings are really big right now. Do you want to show me with your hands how big they are?"
7. "Do you want a quiet bubble (space) or a talking buddy right now?"
Kids benefit when adults helping them can pause, connect and remind them they are not alone, especially in hard moments.
Have an amazing October!

Every Day Counts!
When students attend school regularly, they build strong habits, deeper connections, and more opportunities to learn.
📌 Did you know?
- Families are the #1 influence on student attendance.
- Half of the students who miss 2-4 days in September are likely to miss more than a month of school.
Building good routines—bedtime, morning prep, and consistent schedules—helps students show up ready to learn. Thank you, Monroe families, for making Every Day Count!
#EveryDayCounts #AttendanceMatters

What 10 Days Look Like
📌 Did you know?
Chronic Absence is missing just 10 days of school, excused or unexcused. This is like being out 2 full weeks—that’s nearly a month of learning missed over the course of the year!
Even excused absences add up, so showing up consistently is key. Every day matters, because Every Day Counts!
How Families Can Help
🤝 Families make a difference!
- Set a consistent bedtime and morning routine
- Schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible
- Schedule vacations during breaks
- Talk to your child about why showing up matters
How the District Supports Students
💡 We’re here to help! The School District of Monroe provides supports for students who struggle with attendance, including:
- Tiered interventions for academic and behavioral support
- Social-emotional check-ins and counseling
- Family partnerships to remove barriers to school
When families and schools work together, students are more likely to attend every day. Let’s make attendance a priority—because Every Day Counts! ✨

For home varsity football games, elementary and middle school students are expected to have an adult that is attending the game to be responsible for them. This policy is to ensure the safety of all elementary and middle school students of the School District of Monroe. Please make sure the adult is walking into the game with the students that they will be responsible for. |
