Xavier Folk ~ 5th Grade

Today, I have the pleasure of presenting an award to a student who has truly defined what it means to grow. When we talk about success in school, we don't just mean getting the right answers—we mean showing up every day with a heart ready to learn and a spirit ready to help. That is exactly what Xavier has done this year. Xavier has made incredible strides in every single area of school. Whether it’s a tough math problem or a complex reading assignment, his work ethic has been second to none. He doesn't shy away from challenges; instead, he dives in and participates as much as he can. Watching his confidence grow has been one of my favorite parts of this school year. But Xavier’s growth isn't just about his grades. What makes him stand out is how he treats the people around him. He is consistently respectful and kind, not just to his friends in this room, but to everyone he encounters throughout the school. He is the kind of person who leads by example. Xavier, your hard work and your kindness have not gone unnoticed. All of us at Northside are so proud of the student and the person you are becoming. So congratulations,  you deserve this and keep up the great work!!

Safety Patrol – Northside fifth grade students may choose to join the Safety Patrol and offer their services to help make Northside a safer place for everyone. The job of a Safety Patrol member is to serve as a positive role model who both demonstrates and helps enforce school rules. Fifth graders can choose to sign up for any of the following shifts: morning playground, morning homework club, or afternoon playground. The 'playground' shifts have students patrolling outside when most students are either arriving for or leaving from school. The 'homework club' shifts are for fifth graders to help younger kids on their homework before school begins. Safety Patrol positions are assigned a week at a time, so students serve in different positions at different times in the school year. Fifth graders often enjoy the opportunity to serve as student leaders as a part of Safety Patrol. As such, students that donate their time to working on patrol receive 'money' in the form of the fifth grade checkbook system.

Race to Read – Race to Read is an academic competition that is available to 4th and 5th grade students. Students sign up in the fall to be a participant in the Race to Read competition. Students are given ten books to read throughout the school year. A competition is held in May where students are asked questions about the books they read and work as a team to answer correctly. A winning team is decided after two rounds of questions and a traveling trophy is awarded to the winning school.

Artsonia – Artsonia is where you can find Northside Elementary School's online art gallery. Each student in grades K - 5 is excited to showcase their own art in an online portfolio. Check back often as artwork is continually added to each portfolio.

Music Program – The Northside music room has adopted the motto: Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand. In the Northside Music Room students learn the basics of musical pitch, rhythm, form, reading and notating, listening, instruments of the orchestra, and time signatures. These concepts are taught through many different mediums including singing, movement, dance, xylophones, drums, recorders, body percussion, and other unpitched percussion instruments. Please come in to Northside and check out all the fun things going on in the music room!

  • African Ensemble is an after school program available to 5th graders. It meets every Thursday from 3:10-4:10. This ensemble teaches students the importance of teamwork, focus, listening, respect, and following a leader all through challenging African-inspired music. We have two concerts throughout the year. If you are interested in attending a concert, please call the Northside office for information.
  • Northside Chorus is a 5th grade choir that meets Thursday mornings during school starting 2nd semester. We sing basic unison and two-part harmony songs highlighting both popular music and traditional folk music from around the world. The Northside Chorus performs in one concert at the end of the school year.
