Summer Learning Bingo Sparks Fun and Academic Practice at Parkside Elementary
By: Jenna Trame, Principal
Parkside Elementary students have been embracing a fun and engaging way to keep their minds active while enjoying the break from the school routine—the Summer Learning Bingo! This exciting activity was designed to encourage students to continue practicing their skills in a playful and meaningful way, making summer learning both enjoyable and rewarding.
Each student received a special bingo card filled with diverse and enticing tasks that blend fun and academics. These tasks ranged from reading a favorite book, practicing math facts, writing a short story, or even exploring outdoor activities. The goal was to complete a line or full card by undertaking various educational activities, all while making summer memorable.
Families played a crucial role in supporting their children’s learning adventures. To make the process interactive and community-oriented, Parkside held designated Bingo Card Turn-In Days in the school library. During these days, families could visit Parkside to turn in completed Bingo cards, pick up new ones and celebrate their children’s efforts. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with staff and school friends during the summer!
Students that attended received tokens and books from the school’s book vending machine and could choose from a variety of books that suited their interests. The book vending machine turns the simple act of reading into a fun and rewarding experience.
Additionally, students also enjoyed making book character treats—delicious snacks inspired by their favorite stories—and exploring the Makerspace activities in the library. Makerspace activities included building projects, creative play and lots of hands-on problem-solving, collaboration, innovation and fun!
A special thank you goes to the PTO for sponsoring the tokens, books, and supplies that made these events possible.
Research emphasizes the importance of continued academic practice over the summer to prevent learning loss and keep students engaged. Summer learning activities not only support academic progress but also promote confidence, independence, and a love of learning—all qualities that will serve students well in the upcoming school year.
We are proud of our students’ enthusiasm and dedication this summer, and we look forward to welcoming them back, ready for more exploration, growth, and achievement.
Thank you to everyone—students, families, staff, and PTO—for making Summer Learning Bingo a meaningful and enjoyable experience. Here’s to an exciting year ahead at Parkside Elementary!

PBIS
Each month students view and discuss two brief videos to support their social-emotional learning as part of our school-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) system. The videos share information from the Zones of Regulation. You may hear your student talk about “which zone they are in”. The Zones of Regulation is a conceptual framework used to teach students self-regulation. Self-regulation can go by many names, such as self-control, self management, and impulse control. It is defined as the best state of alertness of both the body and emotions for the specific situation. For example, when a student plays on the playground or in a competitive game, it is beneficial to have a higher state of alertness. However, that same state would not be appropriate in the library. The lessons and learning activities are designed to help the students recognize when they are in the different Zones as well as learn how to use strategies to change or stay in the Zone they are in. In addition to addressing self-regulation, the students will gain an increased vocabulary of emotional terms, skills in reading other people’s facial expressions, perspective about how others see and react to their behavior, insight into events that trigger their behavior, calming and alerting strategies, and problem solving skills.
Safety Patrol – All Parkside 5th graders have the privilege of being a Safety Patrol member. We have many different positions for Safety Patrol. Some of the favorite positions are bus crossing guard and announcement readers. The responsibilities of a Safety Patrol member include:
-
Report to duty on time and stay on duty until the designated leave time.
-
Perform duties faithfully.
-
Strive to prevent accidents and set a good example for others.
-
Listen to teachers and advisors.
-
Report dangerous practices of students.
-
Strive to earn the respect of fellow students.
-
Get our homework finished on time.
There are two rewards for Safety Patrol members. The first is in January, the second is on the last day of school. Past rewards have included bowling at Leisure Lanes and seeing a feature film at a movie theater.
Race to Read – Race to Read is an academic competition that is available to 4th and 5th grade students. Students sign up in the fall to be a participant in the Race to Read competition. Students are given ten books to read throughout the school year. A competition is held in May where students are asked questions about the books they read and work as a team to answer correctly. A winning team is decided after two rounds of questions and a traveling trophy is awarded to the winning school.
Artsonia – Artsonia is where you can find Parkside Elementary School's online art gallery. Each student in grades K - 5 is excited to showcase their own art in an online portfolio. Check back often as artwork is continually added to each portfolio.
5th Grade Chorus – Students in 5th grade have the opportunity to take part in chorus. This is a non-auditioned group that meets on Friday mornings. The purpose of this group is to expose students to more difficult music and harmonies and prepare them for middle school.
Flag Team – 5th grade volunteers are randomly selected to participate in Parkside's Flag Team. The flag team begins every school-wide assembly with a burst of energy by running two laps and leading students in spelling out the school name one letter at a time. "P A R K S I D E, what does that spell?... Parkside!!!
K-Kids – K-Kids is the largest service organization for elementary students. We are excited to have a Kiwanis K-Kids Club up and running at Parkside! Any students in 4th or 5th grade are welcome to join. During our meetings we learn about how to be leaders in our school, play fun games, and plan and complete service projects for our community.
LRPE – Learning Readiness Physical Education (LRPE) is an innovative and research-based program takes place in the gym before school and is designed with student fitness and academic goals in mind. Staff members lead a group of students through structured movement activities and provide opportunities for students to enhance their social skills.
Research shows that when students elevate their heart rate to 60-90% of their max heart rate for 20 minutes or more their brain produces three chemicals that make them more academically alert (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine). Providing students with this opportunity before school sets them up for success for the school day.
Students in LRPE wear a heart rate monitor watch daily during the class to help monitor their own heart rate and safely reach the appropriate heart rate zone specifically for them. Data collected helps staff plan, assess and make decisions specific student and program needs.
This program started with a very small group of students and has now expanded to include additional students because of the great benefits we are seeing through this unique opportunity.
School Store – A staff advisor works with a group of 4th graders to organize the Parkside school store. The students are a part of the planning, organizing, set-up and running of the school store for the student body. The school store is open 1x per month during the lunch periods and offers a lot of high interest items and school supplies for students at reasonable prices. This Parkside tradition is a student favorite and made possible by the students and staff that give up their lunch and recess times to plan and run the store.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) – GOTR is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in grades 3-5, designed to develop and enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life. The eight week season culminates with the girls participating in a community impact project and a celebratory 5K with our team.
